[뉴스에듀] [NEWSEDU] Now the presidential election is expected to be at fever pitch nationwide and according to the press a good number of candidates are scrambling for the top leader of the nation.

[뉴스에듀] 대선이 전국적으로 절정에 다다를 것으로 예상되는 가운데 언론에 따르면 상당한 수의 후보들이 최고 지도자 자리를 두고 각축전을 벌이고 있다.

As the presidential election will be held on May 9, earlier than originally scheduled because of the upholding of the president's impeachment, we see a lot of reports detailing every aspect of the electioneering that promises to heat up even more as election day comes nearer.

대통령의 탄핵 인용으로 원래 계획되었던 일정보다 당겨 5월 9일 대선이 치러지기 때문에 선거일이 다가오면서 과열될 것으로 예상되는 선거운동의 양상을 자세하게 알리는 보도가 넘쳐난다.

The world community has kept a sharp eye on every development in the enhancement of civil liberty and democratic systems. It has also raved about the emerging maturity of the Korean people in their handling of an inherently volatile politics.

세계는 민권과 자유체제의 신장에 있어 한국에서 일어나는 모든 사태의 추이를 눈여겨 보아왔다. 또한 본질적으로 복잡 미묘한 정치를 잘 꾸려가는 한국인의 성숙에도 큰 관심을 보였다.

However, generally speaking, the nation's psychology is still wallowing in anachronism and backwardness, simply contradicting the verbal commitment to the pursuit of democratization and rationalization.

그러나 전반적으로 한국인의 심리는 민주화와 합리화를 추구하겠다고 공언하는 것과는 상치되게 아직도 시대착오적이고도 퇴행적인 관습에 젖어 있다.

So, it is high time we did something epochal to throw off this kind of undesirable national mind-set. Now, we are compelled to initiate a spiritual or moral renewal movement immediately to revolutionize our national traits.

그래서 이제는 이 바람직한 국민성을 떨쳐버리기 위해 무엇인가 획기적인 것을 해야 할 때다. 지금 우리는 국민성을 개혁하기 위해 정신개량운동이나 도덕갱신운동을 펼쳐야 한다.

It, of course, will not be attained in a short time. We believe it will require concerted endeavor over a long span of time before the change of public consciousness is obvious, and the moral drive is to be a national cause which will turn out to re-mould the nation's psyche freshly.

물론 이것은 단기간 내 이루어질 수 없다. 국민의 의식이 변화하기까지에는 장시간에 걸쳐 끊임없는 노력이 있어야 한다. 그리고 이 정신운동은 국민의 심성을 새롭게 하려는 국민의 큰 뜻이 담겨야 한다.

In a bid to improve the national consciousness, we should develop various levels of educational programs which will be conducted systematically from the early stages of life. Policy-making efforts to that effect should be of the highest priority, even though they will cost heaps of money, because any normal approach to reforge stagnant nationhood into democratic savvy will not so effective.

국민의식을 개선하기 위해서는 어릴 때부터 체계적으로 실시할 수 있는 각종 수준의 교육프로그램을 개발하여야 한다. 그리고 교육 개발을 위한 정책 결정은 설사 많은 재원이 소요된다 하더라도 최우선이 되어야 한다. 왜냐하면 정체된 국민성을 민주적으로 선진화시키기 위해서는 통례적인 접근방식으로는 효과를 거두기 어렵기 때문이다.

The important thing is we have to be aware of the immediacy of the need for the programs. We come to feel keenly the necessity of launching a spiritual renewal movement to make ourselves truly mature.

중요한 것은 이러한 교육정책 개발의 필요성이 절실하다는 것을 인식하는 것이다. 우리는 스스로 더욱 성숙해지기 위해 정신개혁운동을 먼저 전개해야 할 필요성을 절감하게 된다.
